Arsenic treated wood has been banned or restricted by countries, including Switzerland, Vietnam, Japan, Indonesia,Denmark, Sweden, Germany, and Australia. However, CCA is still manufactured and widely sold in the U.S.
Arsenic is a known carcinogen, linked to skin, bladder, lung, liver and kidney cancers, as well as immune suppression, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. Studies suggest that even very low levels of arsenic can change hormone functions.
Children's playground equipment offers a high risk of exposure. Studies indicate that a child may ingest 24 to 630 micrograms of arsenic during a single play on equipment made of arsenic treated wood.
